Melbourne’s Best Bits

Melbourne has been named the world’s most liveable city for 6聽years in a row! Melbourneans think this is THE best award possible, and seem to mistake “liveable” for “best”… But, as described below, it is a cracker of a spot. It is considered the most cosmopolitan of all the Australian cities聽– boasting聽great food, coffee, fashion and a thriving arts scene. Melbourne may聽also be the least “Strayan” spot in the country with its strong European feel.
It has been my home for over 2 years now and I think it聽is high time for me to聽give you a list of聽my favourite things to do in Melbourne!

***

Mo偶e pochwali膰 si臋 dobr膮 kaw膮 oraz wykwintnym jedzeniem. Miasto wyr贸偶nia tak偶e dobra聽moda, teatry, liczne festiwale, street-art i wiele wi臋cej.

Wed艂ug mnie jest to najmniej australijskie 鈥淎ussie鈥 miasto. Najwy偶szy czas na kr贸tk膮 list臋 moich ulubionych atrakcji Melbourne.

1. Peddle Peddle Peddle… It’s Cycle time!

I cycle around Melbourne A LOT. A lot a lot a lot! I use my two wheels to get to work, to yoga, to the shops and everywhere else. There are plenty of bike paths worth exploring that give you a chance to see the city zipping by from a different perspective. Everything looks better from 2 wheels. The Main Yarra Trail runs along the river and is a cycling paradise, or if you’re more coastally minded go聽cruise along the beach. What about a cheeky dip to cool down after a good cycling excercise?

Najfajniejsze 艣cie偶ki znajdziesz wzd艂u偶 rzeki (the Main Yara Trail) lub zatoki.

2. Plant yourself on聽the steps of Fed Square.

Federation Square (or “Fed Square” as the locals shorten everything) is Melbourne’s take on a market square. Sit on the “Fed Square” steps, put on your sunnies and enjoy some cheeky people-watching with the famous Flinder Street Station in the background. I would strongly suggest refraining from any food-related activities while chillaxing on the steps. You might become a victim of a hungry seagull. I once had a near death experience as a seagull swooped out of nowhere and stole my sandwich!

DSC_0580

Usi膮d藕 na schodach, schowaj si臋 za ciemnymi okularami i ogl膮daj przechodni贸w gnaj膮cych we wszystkich kierunkach, a wi臋kszo艣ci ku Flinder Street Station czyli w stron臋 tutejszego dworca g艂贸wnego. Odradzam jakiekolwiek czynno艣ci zwi膮zane z jedzeniem w okolicach Federation Square. Mo偶esz si臋 sta膰 ofiar膮 g艂odnej mewy. Jedna kiedy艣 bezczelnie skrad艂a mi kanapk臋.

3.聽Go caffeinate yourself

Melbourne is known for its insufferable passion聽for coffee. Locals just love their daily trip to a caf茅 to pick up their favourite takeaway coffee. To come to the Australia鈥檚 coffee capital and not have a flat white is a massive faux pas! Coffee here is like beer to an English person, or Vodka to Polish people.

艁yknij dobrej kofeiny.

Melbourne szczyci si臋 mianem stolicy kawy. Tutejsze mieszczuchy uwielbiaj膮 codzienn膮 wypraw臋 do ulubionej kafejki po czarny nap贸j.

4. Get sunburnt (and have a drink!) at a rooftop bar.

There are plenty of high-altitude drinking spots where you can sip your fav cold beverage, look at the shimmering city lights and hope for an Instagram-worthy sunset. We usually hit Rooftop Bar (creative!) in the CBD because it鈥檚 close to work. The staircase is a bit of a climb but views are rewarding! Loop and Madame Brussells are also great options.

Inne miejsc贸wki warte odwiedzin to Loop i Madame Brussells.

5. Get lost in Melbourne’s street art

Hozier Lane is the most obvious choice to take snaps of Melbourne street art. Without wanting to sound like an old person, I think the lane is not what it used to be when I first arrived in Melbourne 2 years ago (ages!)!! Nowadays. the walls look pretty hectic and crazy. But wander a few streets away and you’re sure to find a few other gems (we bumped into two massive Kim Kardashian murals the other day!) The other graffiti-rich area to visit is Fitzroy.

Li藕nij troch臋 graffiti.

Hozier Lane w CBD to najbardziej obfotografowana uliczka z graffiti. Ostatnio natkn臋li艣my si臋 na sam膮 Kim Kardashian! Inn膮 graficiarsk膮 mekk膮 jest Fitzroy.

6. Have a “smashed avo” at a caf茅.

Think you know avocado? You don’t. Australia is an avocado-crazed country and they have thought up just about everything you can imagine with this seemingly inocuous vegetable. Smashed avocado (or just 鈥淎vo鈥) on toast is a staple at any caf茅 and determines the place鈥檚 popularity ratings. Smashed avo is definitely one my favourite weekend brunch options! Yummy in my tummy!

Skosztuj “smashed-avo”.

7. Try not to get lost in the lanes in the CBD.

At first glance, the City Business District (CBD) is just lots of high-rise buildings, lots of traffic, packs of tourists, people constantly on the run, etc. However, the soul of the city are its lanes and arcades. Immerse yourself in the narrow dimmed lanes and enjoy the bountiful food and trendy shops.

Zabiegani ludzie, t艂umy turyst贸w, tramwaje, samochody, wie偶owce 鈥 istny chaos, kt贸ry najlepiej omija膰 szerokim 艂ukiem. W艣r贸d tego miejskiego zgie艂ku kryje si臋 jednak kilka diamencik贸w. Zanurz si臋 w ciasne uliczki i odkryj ten skarb miasta.

8. Picnic in the Royal Botanic Gardens!!

I spent a lot of my time during my first year In Melbourne at the Botanic Gardens reading books and dozing on the meticulously manicured grass. The Garden is massive and if you don鈥檛 watch your step you are likely to get lost in the labyrinth of alleys. It is a beautiful place to walk around and discover amazing native plants.

Wybierz si臋 na piknik do Ogrodu Botanicznego.

Wi臋kszo艣膰 czasu podczas pierwszych miesi臋cy w Melbourne sp臋dzi艂am w Ogrodzie Botanicznym. Poch艂on臋艂am sporo ksi膮偶ek wyleguj膮c si臋 na perfekcyjnie przystrzy偶onej trawce. Ogr贸d Botaniczny jest ogromny i 艂atwo si臋 w nim zgubi膰 niczym w labiryncie.

9. Visit the Shrine of Remembrance.

The Shrine of Remembrance is a war memorial and a bit of a sacred place in the heart of Melbourne. It is also an interesting piece of architecture. You have to climb up to the viewing balcony. It offers amazing view of the city – right up the centre of Swanson Street. Can you spot a face on one of the buildings? There’s some Where’s Wally for you…

Odwied藕 Shrine of Remembrance.

Shrine of Remembrance to pomnik wzniesiony dla ofiar pierwszej i drugiej wojny 艣wiatowej. Miejsce ma wr臋cz status 艣wi臋tego.

10. Beach yourself in Brighton.

The colourful beach huts in Brighton beach are probably the most famous Melbourne postcard image. Be prepared to see lots and lots of selfie-takers!聽And make sure you photo-bomb one! (just not one that I am in…!)

Pojed藕 na pla偶臋 w Brighton.

Kolorowe domki nap lazy w Brighton i zarys miasta w dalekim tle to chyba najs艂ynniejsza poczt贸wka z Melbourne. Przygotuj si臋 na spore t艂umy fotografuj膮ce si臋聽przy domkach!

11. Fit in with the cool kids at聽St Kilda beach.

Melbourne is on聽the bay which means that city beaches are rather flat and not exciting – although kite surfers provide a good show on a windy day. In terms of city beaches – St Kilda is the main beach and Melbourne’s “Miami”. It鈥檚 not my go-to beach, it feels rather loud and a bit tacky.聽I prefer South Melbourne beach – 10 minutes up the road where it’s a bit more zen. However, being a city landmark, you have to head there for a drink 聽or to take a selfie in front of the Luna Park at least.

Pokr臋膰 si臋 na s艂ynnej pla偶y St Kilda.

St Kilda to g艂贸wna miejska pla偶a. No i koniecznie cyknij fot臋 z Luna Parkiem w tle!

12. Fancy yourself a hipster? Try Fitzroy – it’s Hipster Advanced Level.

Fitzroy is VERY hipster! Not sure if I even know enough words in hipster-speak to even describe the area. The neighbourhood attracts crowds with vintage, second-hand or design-oriented shops. It is also home to an impressive list of dining and drinking spots. You can eat, drink and shop to your heart鈥檚 content! And you guessed it – you’ll find plenty of coffee there – all served by barristas with beards or crazy piercings and tatoos!

Jeste艣 hipsterem? Poszw臋daj si臋 po Fitzroy.

Fitzroy to mekka hipster贸w. Znajduje si臋 tam mn贸stwo sklep贸w vintage, eleganckich lumpeks贸w, sklep贸w z designerskimi meblami, rzeczami do domu i ciuchami. To tak偶e adres najmodniejszych knajp, restauracji i bar贸w. Ka偶dy znajdzie tam co艣 dla siebie.

13. Escape it all – fish and chips at Half Moon Bay.

image1 (3)

This is my favourite thing to do in Melbourne. Unfortunately, Half Moon Bay is quite far from the city centre and you need a car to get there (or be an ambitious cyclist!). But it鈥檚 worth the effort. The bay is stunning and sells lip-smacking fish and chips out of a cute little shop right on the sand! There’s a restaurant on top too if you feel like being fancy. 聽Someone once told me that fish and chips in Australia is too healthy (outrageous comment). I love it here. It鈥檚 always so fresh and delish!

Zjedz ryb臋 z frytkami w Zatoce P贸艂ksi臋偶ycowej.

M贸j numer jeden! Niestety Zatoka P贸艂ksi臋偶ycowa znajduje si臋 spory kawa艂ek od centrum i najlepiej dojecha膰 tam autem. Zatoka oferuje pi臋kne widoki i palce liza膰 ryb臋 z frytkami. Bzdura!! Australijskie fish and chips jest najlepsze! Zw艂aszcza latem na pla偶y. Uwaga na mewy! Zawsze poluj膮 na frytki!

14. Dumplings in China Town.

Melbourne boasts an amazing Asian food scene! For a cheap (and still good) taste of dumplings make your way to China Town. Shanghai Village is a bit of an institution, and tends to be our go-to (although every local tells you they know THE best secret dumplings spot). I think going to one of the restaurants in China Town is quite an experience not to be missed.

Zjedz chi艅skie piero偶ki w China Town.

W Melbourne mo偶na skosztowa膰 wiele azjatyckich przysmak贸w.

15. Be both a fashion icon and a foodie聽– check out BOTH聽ends of Chapel Street.

Chapel Street is a true shopping heaven. While one end of the street is packed with shops and shopaholics with good taste, the other end聽is heaven for your palate! It鈥檚 a hub of cool eating and drinking spots. Not to be missed.

Chapel Street to z jednej strony niebo dla mi艂o艣nik贸w zakup贸w, a z drugiej magnes dla koneser贸w dobrego jedzenia. Ja wol臋 t膮 drug膮 stron臋 tej niesamowicie d艂ugiej ulicy! Koniecznie odwied藕 znajduj膮ce si臋 tam gastronomiczne pere艂ki: Tokyo Tina, Hawker鈥檚 Hall, Mr Miyagi.

16. Be a local and eat fresh! It’s market time.

Going to one of the Melbourne market is a must. Queen Victoria Market is the oldest and the largest. My personal favourite is South Melbourne Market which in summer runs a Night Market every Thursday night with food trucks and live music. Food trucks are very popular in Melbourne and you just need to eat something that was prepared in a kitchen on wheels! There is another nice market in Prahran, which is worth a look if you head to Chapel Street (it’s right around the corner).

Odwied藕 lokalny targ.

Wizyta na jednym z targ贸w w Melbourne to obowi膮zkowa pozycja! Queen Victoria Market to najstarszy i najwi臋kszy targ w Melbourne. A ponadto latem w ka偶dy czwartek odbywa si臋 “nocny market” z food truckami, muzyk膮 na 偶ywo i pysznymi p膮czkami w czekoladzie! W Melbourne musisz chocia偶 raz zje艣膰 co艣 co zosta艂o przygotowane w kuchni na k贸艂kach!

17. The quintessential Melbourne experience: watch a game at the MCG.

Melbourne loves sport. Both men and women share this weird and insane passion聽for sport, especially Australian football or “AFL”. AFL, also known as footy, is SUPER popular. If you are here from March to September, make sure you watch a game at the MCG (the ‘home of football’) while the footy season is on. For more passionate sport lovers, the MCG does tours if that’s your thing.

Ulubionym sportem jest australijski futbol czyli 鈥渇ooty鈥.

18. Go to the Best Cinema in the World… The Moonlight cinema in the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Probably the best cinema in the world! (source: Chris, he says this everytime we go there). Prepare your picnic basket, grab your blanket, a few pillows for extra comfort and anything bubbly and head to the Gardens to find your spot on the hill to watch the movie. Beware of huge bats flying above the movie-watchers. They like to come out after dusk! The hill looks over the city, and it’s just the best.

Wybierz si臋 do kina w Ogrodzie Botanicznym.

19. Get vertigo – the city view from Eureka Tower.

Eureka Tower is the highest building in Melbourne (297.3m). Take the lift to the 88th floor and soak the 360 degree view of the sprawling city. There is an ‘Edge’ experience which sends you out off the edge in a glass cube…

Wjed藕 na szczyt Eureka Tower. Niech zakr臋ci Ci si臋 w g艂owie!

Budynek Eureka Tower to najwy偶szy wie偶owiec w Melbourne (297.3m). Wskocz do windy, wci艣nij pi臋tro 88 i daj si臋 wznie艣膰 na sam膮 g贸r臋 sk膮d rozpo艣ciera si臋 niesamowita panorama miasta! Nie wida膰 ko艅ca Melbourne. Miasto wije si臋 na wiele kilometr贸w!

20. Meander along Southbank.

Take a walk along Southbank with bars and restaurants on one side and the Yarra River on the other. The best spots to enjoy a cold beverage are Arbory and Ponyfish (this one literally on the river under a bridge). They tend to get packed, but luckily you’ve have a cool sweet beverage to keep you sane!

DSC_0612

Przespaceruj si臋 wzd艂u偶 Southbank.

Moje ulubione miejsc贸wki serwuj膮ce zimne trunki to Arbory i Ponyfish. Oba miejsca s膮 zwykle zat艂oczone w pi膮tkowe wieczory.

21. Eat a burger. Eat many burgers.

Some food guru labelled Aussie burgers the worst burgers in the world. Apparently they do it all wrong by adding beetroot, egg and pineapple! I disagree! It鈥檚 a great combo and you should try to get all messy and have one either at Huxtaburger or Trailer Park. Pineapple is a hugely excellent idea. Australians also fry pineapple as a pineapple ‘fritter’ which is deeeelicious. But that’s a whole other story.

Zjedz burgera. Zjedz duuuuu偶o burger贸w!

Buraki, jajka i ananas w burgerze?! Kto to widzia艂?! Wed艂ug mnie jest to przepyszna kombinacja, kt贸rej trzeba spr贸bowa膰! W Australii serwuj膮 r贸wnie偶 sma偶one ananasy, kt贸re s膮 przepyszne! Niebo w g臋bie! Ale to temat na ca艂ego posta. Wracaj膮c do burger贸w, pobrud藕 sobie r臋ce w Huxtaburger lub w Trailer Park! Mniam!

Day trips from Melbourne:

You can also do an infinite number of day trips from Melbourne. Amongst them is the most famous attraction… the Great Ocean Road.
1. Phillip Island 鈥 great for surfing enthusiasts and penguin-lovers. Go there to see the famous Penguin Parade after your day sesh at the beach. We lovvveee Phillip Island. Beach walks never get old, and never were so good.
2. Great Ocean Road 鈥 a poster attraction of Victoria. A drive along the beautiful and winding coast towards rock formations known as the Twelve Apostles. It gets super busy in summer, but it’s a classic.
3. Wilsons Prom 鈥 definitely the most underestimated spot on the map! The area is great for outdoorsy people who love action-packed days. It鈥檚 just nature overload! Everyone that goes want to return, and it’s not uncommon to hear people say it’s the best place in the world…
4. Mornington Peninsula 鈥 great for surfing, relaxing and dolphin-spotting. A bit fancy 馃槈
5. Yarra Valley 鈥 beautiful picturesque valley dotted with vineyards where you can indulge in wine tasting. No further enticement needed. Remember to come with a teetotaller who will drive you back to Melbourne!

Dok膮d z Melbourne na wycieczk臋?

Z Melbourne niedaleko do kilku flagowych atrakcji stanu Wiktoria. Moje ulubione:
1. Phillip Island 鈥 raj dla surfer贸w i mi艂o艣nik贸w鈥ingwin贸w.
2. Dwana艣cie Aposto艂贸w 鈥 najs艂ynniejsza atrakcja regionu. Przejed藕 si臋 wzd艂u偶 zachwycaj膮cego wybrze偶a z pi臋knymi klifami i pla偶ami. Okrutnie zat艂oczone w czasie lata!
3. Wilsons Prom 鈥 chyba najbardziej niedoceniony kawa艂ek Wiktorii. Wilsons Prom to boskie widoki, natura, spok贸j i ciekawskie wombaty. Idealna miejsc贸wka dla maniak贸w przyrody.
5. Yarra Valley 鈥 pag贸rki i doliny usiane winnicami gdzie mo偶na spr贸bowa膰 lokalnego wina. Koniecznie zapro艣 na wycieczk臋 totalnego abstynenta, kt贸ry odwiezie cie z powrotem do Melbourne.
